Medicaid Redetermination - What it is and how to complete the process

As the pandemic’s influence on policies subsides our community will be impacted. One such impact is the redetermination of Medicaid coverage. Individuals will once again need to verify they are still eligible for the program.

Medicaid redetermination or recertification is a review of eligibility for individuals enrolled in the program. State Medicaid agencies conduct this periodic review to ensure that individuals still meet the qualifications and requirements for continued enrollment in the program.

During a redetermination, individuals will most likely asked to provide various forms of updated information. This could include income, household composition, assets, and other factors that play into determining their eligibility. This process is to verify that individuals still meet the criteria for enrollment based on their current circumstances.

It's important for individuals enrolled in Medicaid to respond to redetermination notices promptly and provide the necessary information requested by the state Medicaid agency. If this step is missed it will result in the loss of Medicaid coverage.

Redeterminations are usually conducted periodically, often annually, but the specific timing and requirements can vary by state. States have their own guidelines and procedures for conducting redeterminations, so the process might differ depending on where you live.

Different states use different terms for this process. Some examples are:

  • Medicaid Renewal

  • Medicaid Recertification

  • Medicaid Re-evaluation

  • Medicaid Review

  • Medicaid Eligibility Verification

While different states use their distinct terminology to describe this process,  these terms generally encapsulate the idea of re-evaluating, confirming, or renewing an individual's eligibility for Medicaid benefits.

Initiating this process yourself will be particularly important if the eligible individual has moved and their new address has not been updated with the state.
